The Age of the Key….

By eyeswide, March 9, 2010

Does anyone remember those days that you used to pack the kids up for school, kiss a loved one goodbye for the day, walk to the car, turn a key and open the car door – and trundle off to work? Sounds simple enough doesn’t it?

Nowadays, the usual stuff is still there – the kids, the kisses etc..however to unlock the front door you have to release the snib, pull the latch back, turn the mortice lock key and pull the handle down – or better still you’re on uPVC door, and you have to turn the key, push the handles down, open the door – then close the door, lift the handles, turn the key…blah blah!

Then – you get to your car, push the button on the fob once, to unlock the initial lock on the doors, twice to unlock the deadlock on the doors, press a different button on the fob to unlock the boot release. Through all of this, you’ve opened the boot, put your laptop bag, handbag and mobile phone into the boot, placed the keys neatly on top, closed it behind you – and hey presto the keys are trapped.

To top the ever increasing blood pressure, the mobile phone is in your handbag, the house keys are on the car key bunch, your neighbours are out and it’s raining.

What do you do? I tell you what – prevention is better than cure! You could buy a magnetic box, place a spare key under the chassis of the car, another spare house key on the inside of the drain pipe – give one to the neighbours. Plenty of places!

Too many people have their spare keys on the main bunch – or only have one key to their car. Get spares cut now – it’ll save money in the long run.

Starting a Home Based Internet Business can be Painless

By eyeswide, March 9, 2010

You may not have all the skills you need but that’s OK, you will find that starting a home based internet business can be a lot more fun than work. You see there are a lot of programs and software that can take the work right out of the business and to see something that you have created become alive is very rewarding.

I think the hardest part to starting a business online is deciding on what it is that you would like to do that can make you an income. But it shouldn’t be all that hard as there are many things and ways to produce an income and as you spend more time in looking around you will find that you can do almost anything on the internet.

There is no better time then the present to be starting a home based internet business! When I was first starting my business there were not as many upstart programs and the learning curve was very steep. Sure there were some programs out there but the saturation of so many doing the same thing with the same web page and ads was hurting all of us.

Now there are a diversity of programs for the beginner with all sort of helping guilds and even one to one support. So you will have a well laid out plan already tried and tested for you to begin your business with. The cost to you for purchasing one of these plans can be very affordable and considering what all is entailed it is a bargain! There are some free plans that are offered and some are good but beware of the free gift. Like the saying,” there’s no free lunch” you may end up spending much more time and money then if you made an upfront purchase for a teaching program.

You may wonder if the program you are buying is the right one for you but remember that although you may not stay with it you will learn much from the experience and you will grow much faster if you act on what ever plan you do find. For a price of a good meal in a nice restaurant you will acquire months of learning that you most likely would not of learn teaching yourself.

To choose a good program, first look into what is offered to you. Will you learn how to make a unique product or skill that when you are finished with the teaching you will be able to accomplish something like making a web site or blog or become a better writer…etc? Does the program offer step by step teaching and promises to refund your money if you are not happy with it? How long do you have to make up your mind two weeks, a month, 90days…? Make sure you take some time to think about the program before you purchase it so you don’t get pressured into something you may regret later.

I personally like everything laid out in videos so I can see what is being done and can always replay it over and over again. Yet a good set of instructions can do wonders as well. To me the product is only as good as the support is, if you have good support then you can accomplish so much more and succeed in your business.

Tips For A Hawaii Wedding

By eyeswide, March 9, 2010

For many people, Hawaii weddings are the ultimate way to tie the knot, and the Pacific Ocean is the perfect location for a wedding. The obvious reasons are indeed obvious – the fabulous climate, the great beaches, the exotic setting and the unbeatable Hawaiian welcome. Then there is the fabulous food, the entertainment and simply the fact that you are in Hawaii. Most of all, however, there is the romance. Nevertheless, the best way to organize a wedding in Hawaii is to seek the services of a professional.

Any destination wedding takes a lot of planning and Hawaiian weddings are no different. Simply getting everybody there on time is hard enough, but then you have the catering, the dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses and even the priest to get organized. And don’t forget the reception venue and the photographer and … miss out even one of these, and you will be left looking a bit embarrassed. Luckily the internet can help you.

Another item you’ll need to consider is flying the wedding party to Hawaii. You’ll need to make sure everyone is there on time. It’s best to make reservations well in advance to insure everyone can be on the same flight together. Then you will want to arrange airport transportation so everyone can stay together.

Then there is the wedding dress and dresses for the bridesmaids, the flower girls and the clothes for the page boys if you have them. All of that has to be transported from your home town to Hawaii! You could choose one of the many off the peg ‘ready mades’ in Hawaii when you are there to arrange the wedding, but there is no guarantee that it will fit you when you pick it up. It might fall off you because you have been slimming for your wedding!

If you mail your wedding dress to Hawaii, or the bridesmaids dress or any other of the formal wedding clothes, make sure that they are inspected on arrival and then pressed or steamed. Try to seal them when they are packed, and make sure that the package or box is clearly labeled with the contents and use a ‘Fragile’ label.

You can also plan Hawaii weddings easily using a hotel there. Most hotels in Hawaii have wedding planners and a wedding team specifically to help those coming in to get married from another place. They will sort out everything for you so you will simply arrive to a fabulous wedding set up.

One of the most important people attending your wedding, apart from the officiant marrying you, is the photographer. Make sure your photographer is arranged well in advance or you will be relying on friends and relatives for your wedding photographs. Also, a local photographer will know the best places for your photo sessions.

You Need To Know Why Good Employees Leave

By eyeswide, March 9, 2010

There is an expense associated to losing any employee in the time it takes for them to be replaced, the effort required to find a replacement as well as any recruitment and advertising costs on top of which there is the cost of losing knowledge and experience that is specific to the organization; Losing good employees is a problem where prevention is most definitely the best cure.

It is a fact of life that employees will leave from time to time but it is useful for an employer to understand the reasons for an employee to leave so that they can be sure that personnel are leaving for reasons that are right and not reasons that are wrong and avoidable.

Concerns of employees can be identified early by the regular use of well designed job satisfaction surveys, allowing for problems to be resolved and helping to minimize needless loss of staff. However, some problems, especially those that involve personalities, are not always brought to the surface until it is too late.

When personnel decide to change jobs it is very often due to a lack of career development and/or poor management. Both of these problems can be difficult to identify even for organizations that adopt regular 360-degree appraisals (i.e. where as part of the overall review process, employees may be asked to evaluate their managers).

While employed employees can be reluctant to criticize their managers for fear of the consequences, they can however be more candid when completing an employee exit survey.

Although adopting exit surveys many not prevent individuals from leaving it will help bring to the surface problems that could, if left unchecked, result in poor staff moral for the remaining staff and worse case scenario, a flood of resignations.

Lack of Career Development

Not all employers can offer, and nor do all employees desire, a clear and long term career path. Some people find comfort and job security in doing one job but there are just as many who prefer to be continually challenged, always acquiring new skills and steadily moving up the corporate ladder. Organizations that succeed and excel need the balance of having high flyers and steady Eddies.

Having good records could prove to be very valuable long term and they also provide management with information that could help them improve the moral of an organization as well as productivity and the bottom line.

Sub-standard Management

Many managers achieved their position through promotion, but it does not always follow that a good worker will automatically make a good manager and often people are assigned management position without any formal management training.

Managers who perform poorly can be quick to discredit the views of disgruntled staff, ‘I am glad they went it saved me getting rid of them’ and ‘they were useless anyway’ may prove to be common responses to those managers being asked if there are any problems that might be causing people to leave the organization.

It is understandable that senior management would want to support their line managers by giving them the benefit of any doubt and a poor employee may not be averse to unfairly criticising their line manager. But by conducting exit surveys, if a man-management problem were to be identified early there is a good chance that it can be addressed and resolved with the appropriate formal training and guidance.

Records

It is not that unusual for a person to leave an employer and put in a claim for constructive dismissal at a later date. With legal representation now adopting the ‘No win no fee’ model even good employers are finding this to be a real problem. Exit surveys will at best, provide a valuable record of the employee’s reasons for leaving, and at worse, provide early warning that a possible claim might be expected.

Unless it is on record a tribunal will not necessarily accept an employer’s word that when an employee left they did so without indicating any grievance.

Timing

Exit surveys can be conducted as part of the termination procedures or they can, with the employee’s agreement, be delayed for a few months.

The advantage with delaying an exit survey for a few months is that after a period of reflection a former employee can be less emotional and more objective and if they have taken up another position they may be in a position to compare their previous role with their new role.

Conducting an exit survey as part of the termination procedure has the advantage that although the leaving employee may be emotional their views may be more reflective of their true state of mind and therefore closer to the real reasons they have decided to leave. If delayed any comparison between the ex-employee’s old and new roles may be the result of them putting on a brave face, and if the reasons that are given require action, the delay may have prevented the problem from being resolved.

Summary

Organizations will generally benefit in a number of different ways by including exit surveys as part of their employee termination procedures. They will at the very least provide good records that could prove very valuable later, at best they will provide management with information that can help improve an organization spiritually and with the bottom line.

Moving Cheap? Winter is the Best Time

By eyeswide, March 9, 2010

Most of us do not have the choice of what time of year they can move. Usually there are outside factors that dictate when we move like; a new job, the sale of a house, kids schools, and getting evicted. I hope you are not moving because of eviction, but it does happen. If you do have the choice of when you move and need to be moving cheap then pick winter.

Many places around the country have a ton of ice and snow during certain months. You should probably avoid those times. Moving trucks usually do not have studs or snow tires. But you will have to use your own judgment on that. Moving cheap is also quite possible in the early spring and late fall. Just avoid the summer.

Why should you avoid the summer if at all possible? Everyone and there dog is trying to move during the summer. You are going to be competing with a lot of other people for movers, moving trucks, and those containers for container moving. Just remember the law of supply and demand. The demand is higher than the supply in the summer so they can charge a premium. In the winter the demand is much lower than the supply so they are more likely going to give you a discount to get your biasness. Moving cheap in the winter is definitely the best way to go if you can.

Winter can also be a better time to get a rental or buy a home. Since most people are not looking in the winter so you might get to work with a desperate seller or land lord. This of coerce depends on the housing market. It does not hurt to try.
